Goodreads Best Children's Book of 2022 Kid's Indie Next List Pick Emile is not shy—he is quiet. Emile may seem timid and shy on the outside, but on the inside he is bustling with imagination. While grownups and even other kids may see Emile as the shy kid who doesn’t raise his hand in class, we know that Emile is actually a high-seas adventurer, a daring explorer, and a friend to wild beasts. This story honors and encourages the beauty of knowing ourselves for exactly who we are. Emile’s world shows us that the mind of a quiet child can be as rich, expansive, and bold as that of any other (more extroverted) child.

レビュー

  • It’s such a wonderful book and my son loves it.

  • The genius of this book is that it empowers children while educating adults. For many children being quiet is taken as a sign of social frailty. This book exposes the dangerous flaw in such thinking. For children who have been labeled shy, anti-social, or awkward this book offers solace. Being quiet is okay. It's more than okay; it's perfect. With its subtle message and whimsical illustrations, this book challenges adults to peer deeper into the child's inner-world to discover what's going in the minds of those who prefer not to voice their every thought.

  • Love this book. So well written and inclusive. The illustrations are just stunning.

  • I Am Quiet is like a flashlight in book form. It illuminates all the things that sparkle inside a young boy named Emile who doesn't talk a lot, prefers not to raise his hand in class, and is, from an adult perspective, shy. Only he's not! Inside Emile lives in a wildly imaginative and complex and beautiful world that he's constantly engaging with, and which brings him great joy and comfort. Outwardly, he's a kid who enjoys playing by himself, taking long walks to notice everything around him, creating art, and sometimes playing, quietly, with another friend. And in his quiet, he is also many other things: smart, brave, curious, kind, creative. What a great reminder that everyone contains multitudes, and we can be ourselves in so many different and wonderful ways. Betsy Petersen's playful, childlike illustrations perfectly complement Emile's inner and outer worlds, and I love her clever use of white/negative space around Emile when he's in his outer world vs. the more bold and colorful kingdoms that he explores internally. This is a beautiful and much-needed story.

  • This is a lovely book with dream-like illustration. Perfect for the kids who are named as shy, when they are just introverted. I was a very quiet kid, and often accused of being timid. In fact, I'm not timid at all, just prefer being independent! My own child is quite loud, and I like how this can show him a different way of relating to the world. Relatable and beautifully written.
