• Aunt LydiaはVocabularyが豊富

  内容や書評については他のレビュアーが多く書いている通りです。ひとつ面白いと思ったことは、Aunt Lydiaの章は、どれもAtwoodが使っている単語が高度だということです。これはAgnesやBaby Nicoleとは違い、Gileadでは高位であり、指導的立場の登場人物の語りであることを読者に示していることの証左です。何度か辞書にあたり、意味を確認する必要がありましたが、原文で小説を読む醍醐味がここにはあります。テレビで４週に渡って紹介されて有名になりましたが、ディストピア小説というより、女性が活躍する世界が拡がっている物語だと感じます。

• A deeper look into the roots and legacies of a place called Gilead

  As the continuation of "Handmaid's Tale", this book answers a lot of questions about what happened to the resistance mentioned in the first book, as well as characters we know. However, despite the connection to the "Handmaid's Tale", the bulk of this story provides a broader look into the society of Gilead. It is this additional view of Gilead and its people, its founders, that is haunting, ever so much more because of resemblance to elements and teachings that make the news in our world today. All women should read this. I want my daughter to read this book so that she knows that some people may wish for a society like Gilead, but it is in all of our interests as females to make sure that it never is realized.

  I could not stop reading it. It is such an exciting storyline and Atwood is an amazing author. Such a beautiful way of writing. One of my favorite book.

  ディストピア小説として、物語に登場する女性たちの境遇に胸を馳せる一方で、どの章たりとも退屈する事の無いストーリー、伏線やそれぞれの物語の繋がり方に圧巻されました。 (仕事中お手洗いに行くふりをしてこっそり読み進めていました) 前作は読んでいませんが、Hulu でシーズン1, 2を鑑賞しています。 おそらく前作はHandmaidから見たGilead を中心に話が進んでいたのだと予想しますが、本作没頭では特に子供たちから見たGileadや、Gilead体制になる前のAunt Lydiaについて書かれていたのが興味深かったです。

  生殖に関する女性の選ぶ権利が実際に脅かされている現在のアメリカでは、The Handmaid's Taleは決して「ありえない架空のディストピア」ではなくなっている。 そんななか、マーガレット・アトウッドがThe Handmaid's Taleの続編であるThe Testamentsを出版した。ブッカー賞の審査官であっても出版日までは全編を読むことを許されていないほど秘密主義だったようだが、アマゾンが発売日より前に一部のカスタマーに「ミス」で郵送してしまったというスキャンダルもあった。 それほど期待されたThe Testamentsだが、何十年も前からThe Handmaid's Taleを愛してきた読者にとっては不安な本でもあった。せっかくの名作の価値を損なう駄作だったらどうしよう？ 結論から言うと、駄作ではないが、前作のように歴史に残る名作でもない。前作が紛れもない「文芸小説」だったのに対し、新作はよくある「ディストピア・ファンタジー」のように感じる。読んでいて面白いが、前作のように、行間から漂う不気味さや絶望感はない。しかし、前作では不明だったGileadの初期、構造、命運、そしてOffredのその後などの回答を得ることができるので、アトウッドが多くの読者から受けた質問の回答編としては納得できる。また、アクションが多くて決して読み飽きない。 Gileadの成人女性にはWife（妻）、Handmaid（子供を生むだけの道具）、Martha（手伝い）、Aunt（小母）という４つの階級しかない。上流階級の若い女性は学校で良き妻になる教育を受け、十代のうちに年上の司令官や上官の「幼妻」になる。上流階級の家で料理や掃除を行うMarthaには個々の名前はなく、誰もがMarthaと呼ばれる。何人のMarthaをあてがわれるかでその家の主人の重要さがわかるようになっている。文字が読めるのはAuntだけであり、そのほかの女性は本だけでなく文字を読むことが禁じられている。掟を破った広場で絞首刑になるか、罪が軽くて若ければ司令官たち専用の娼婦という運命しかない。 The Testamentsの主要人物は、前回でOffredのサディスティックな教育係だったAunt Lydia、Kyle司令官の養子として育てられたAgnes、そしてカナダで育った16歳のDaisy（読者にはGileadが取り戻したがっているBaby Nicoleだとすぐわかるようになっている）の3人の女性だ。 この中で最も興味深いのはAunt Lydiaだ。前の世界ではフェミニストで元女性判事だったAunt LydiaがいかにしてGileadの主要人物になったのか、そしてこの国の未来をどう操ろうとしているのか、そのあたりに人間の複雑さを感じる。 この小説の３人の女性が教えてくれるのは、民主主義や人権がいかに脆弱なものかということだ。

• A decent book, but no handmaid's tale

  I thought the storyline was interesting and getting to know certain characters more deeply was intriguing as well. However, the original Handmaid's tale wasn't just a book, it was poetry. The turns of phrases and expressions were just gorgeous and that is what distinguishes Atwood from other good writers. So while this book is good, it's not what I would have hoped for from a writer of Atwood's ability.

• lange erwartet....

  Vorab ich kam durch die Serie zu den Büchern. Als Offred / June (in der Serie) schwanger war, wollte ich wissen wie es weitergeht und habe "A handmaids tale" das Buch bestellt und verschlungen. Entäuschend war lediglich dass die Serie schon weiter war als das Buch und es dahingehend keine neuen Informationen gab, allerdings hat das Lesen des Buches geholfen Gilead zu verstehen. Es ist sehr gut beschrieben, viel besser als es die Serie zeigt. Was ich ausserdem gut fand ist dass nichts zusätzlich dazu erfunden wurde um die Serie dramatischer zu gestalten, alles im 1.Buch findet sich auch in der Serie und umgekehrt. Daher habe ich die Fortsetzung mit Spannung erwartet und trotz angegebenen Erscheinungsdatum 10.9. letztendlich gestern 20.9. endlich erhalten. Das Buch ist so spannend, dass ich es, ausser ein paar Stunden dringend benötigten Schlaf, NICHT weglegen konnte. Es werden die Aufzeichnungen von 3 Hauptcharakteren beschrieben, deren Leben sich kreuzt owohl sie unterschiedliche Positionen innehaben. Die beiden in Gilead lebenden Personen sind Aunt Lydia und Agnes (Junes Tocher) und ein in Kanada lebendes Mädchen, wer das ist, möchte ich hier nicht spoilern, auf Seite 133 wird es aufgelöst und mit mir mit einem "Yessss, ich wusste es"-Freudenschrei quittiert. Ich fand das Buch toll, als Fan der Serie und des ersten Buches, habe ich sehnsüchtig drauf gewartet und wurde nicht enttäuscht. Wenn man bedenkt wo die Serie gerade steht, wird es vermutlich noch mindestens 2 seasons geben, wenn man das Material dieses Buches (welches sich ja über Jahre hinzieht) einarbeitet. Ich vergebe 5 Sterne, das Einzige, was mich etwas gestört hat, ist die nahezu softe Zeichnung von Aunt Lydia, die ja in der Serie als kalte Unbeugsame gezeigt wird, was sicherlich mehr passt, wenn man bedenkt, dass sie eine der Gründertanten ist, die freie Hand hatten aus fruchtbaren Frauen Handmaids zu machen, mit was für Mitteln auch immer. Sowie das ganze Thema handmaids sicherlich eine Horrorvorstellung für jede Frau ist, so ist es doch realistisch in einem diktatorischen System, wie eine auserwählte Elite durch Abgrenzung, Korruption, Gewalt, Terror, Demütigung und Verbrechen, ihre Machtposition unter allen Umständen zu erhalten versucht, bis eine Widerstandbewegung dieses stürzen kann. Wem die Serie und das 1. Buch gefallen hat, der wird auch dieses lieben. Wer die Serie schaut, der kann auch dieses lesen ohne das 1. Buch gelesen zu haben. Wer weder die Serie noch das 1. Buch kennt, wird es schwer haben die 3 berichtenden Charaktere einzuordnen, da empfiehlt sich dann die Lektüre des 1. Buches zuerst.

• Captivant, c'est dingue!

  Très bon livre, très bien écrit...en cours de lecture en V.O. et en grand format. Le récit en anglais est criant de vérité, de douleurs...comme si on y était!! Je recommande vivement et sincèrement.

• Worthy Sequel

  The Handmaid's Tale is a book that has stayed with me since I first read it. Few books have had such an impact and I wasn't sure that a sequel could ever be as good. Atwood tells the story through the testimonies of 3 women after the fall of Gilead. The book flips back and forth between the 3 voices. That of Aunt Lydia is, in one way, familiar, from the first novel, but The Testaments gives a much deeper insight. She is still a reprehensible character in many ways, but the reader also develops some sympathy for her and even grudging admiration for the way she has clawed her way to power, in a society that doesn't officially allow women any power. The other 2 'testaments' are from young women, identified at first, only as 369a and 369b, though we soon learn more about each of them and they become clearly differentiated. Without giving anything away, it makes sense that these women are identified by similar codes, though at first, I did struggle to remember who was who. The story develops at a faster pace than The Handmaid's Tale. It even seems a bit rushed at the end, but it is exciting and I stayed up much too late and woke up much too early to read on and see what happens next. Those who want to find out what happens to Offred are rewarded with clues that there might have been a happy ending to her Tale. Overall The Testaments is a much more optimistic book, celebrating the indomitable spirits of its female characters and showing how unjust societies eventually lay the foundations for their own collapse. I think The Handmaid's Tale is one of the best books ever written. The Testaments is a worthy sequel.
