• A lot of Hollywood debauchery with an intricately woven story of many characters with a poetic end

  Really impressed by the writing skill. Enjoy the deep stories of each character. Though it often read like a celebrity gossip magazine, in the end it was wrapped up poetically leaving a satisfying, goosebump-inducing aftertaste.

  Nina, Jay, Hud, Kitの４人きょうだいは、伝説的な歌手Mick Rivaの子供として知られていた。けれども、Mickが父親として何の援助もしなかったことを世間は知らない。Mickに捨てられてからひとりで子供たちを育てたJuneは貧困と失望のどん底で死に、高校生だった長女のNinaは学校をやめて弟２人と妹1人を育てた。 サーフィンが人気になりつつあった1970年代、Ninaはフォトジェニックな「女性サーファー」として発掘され、モデルとして有名になった。裸に近いビキニ姿になるのは好きではなかったが、きょうだいを育てるためには魅力的な仕事だった。 経済的に余裕ができて有名なテニスプレイヤーの夫と結婚してマリブの豪邸に住むようになったNinaだが、子供の頃から夢見た安定した幸せは続かなかった。「永遠の愛」を約束した夫は愛人を作り、何の説明もせずに家を出てしまう。タブロイド紙はNinaが夫に捨てられたことを大きく報じ、彼女は自分が母親と同じ歴史を繰り返していることを自覚して落ち込む。その最中にNinaが毎年パーティをする８月27日がやってきた。 最初はきょうだい４人だけの小さな祝いだったパーティは、いまやマリブで有名なイベントになっていた。招待状はなく、人と場所さえ知っていれば参加できるというものだが、それができるのは有名人や家族と親しい者だけなので、ある種のステイタスシンボルにもなっていた。 有名人やエリートアスリートが豪邸を建てるようになったマリブは、定期的に山火事を起こして燃えることでも知られている。多くの者の愛、欲、嫉妬、絶望、憤りが集約した1983年8月27日のNinaのパーティも、最後には燃える運命にあった……。 マリブはもともとは金持ちの別荘ばかりのビーチではなかった。Ninaの祖父母がレストランを経営していた頃には庶民も住んでいた場所だった。Taylor Jenkins Reidの最新作Malibu Risingは、Ninaの両親が出会った1950年代から小説での「現在」までの回想と、パーティ当日の午前7時からの「現在」を交互に語ることで、緊張感を盛り上げている。 同じ作者のDaisy Jones & The SixやThe Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugoよりも軽いところがあるが、最後まで一気に読まずにはいられないページターナーであることは間違いない。また、ハリウッドのインサイダーでもある作者が描いている1980年代のハリウッドの人々言動も興味深い。 マリブが舞台だということもあって、夏にビーチで軽く読む「beach read」にぴったりの小説だ。

  Taylor Jenkins Reidの作品は、毎回違うシチュエーションながら読者を引き込む魅力に溢れているのだが、本作は少し期待はずれ。

  Taylor Jenkins Reid has this amazing ability to write biographies for fake people, but you feel like they are so very real. This one was no different. It was heartbreaking, raw and extravagant. Nothing makes me more hooked than a story of a bunch of flawed, and disfunctional people. I adred the brutal story of Mick Riva and June, and I loved the story of their kids. Also both the 50/60's and the 80's were amazingly done. I felt the feel of Malibu, and the times this took place in. Overall it was another amazing book with nteresting characters, and complex story with a very colorful background. In all honesty I truly can't wait for what will be next from TJR

• It got me to read again!

  I haven’t read a full book in years. I’m talking ten years plus. However with the continued lockdowns in Aus I decided to finally get back into that habit I always told myself I was going to pick up again. This book did not disappoint! I was shocked at how fast I was getting through it. And not once was I tempted to pick up my phone and check it. I breezed through this book. It was enjoyable, well written and weaved multiple complex stories together with ease. The authors writing style is great, I went and bought another of her books, The Seven Husbands Of Evelyn Hugo and have already read half in two days. I’m going to buy all the books she’s written I’m obsessed! I’m so grateful to this book for reinvigorating my love of reading. You’re never too old to start something new (again lol) Get this book you won’t be disappointed!
