“The Exeter Blitz” surges with the unpredictability of a British household where young people come of age as Nazi planes bomb their city. With the father working at the cathedral and the mother at a department store, the family threads of attachment are beginning to come loose. More independence for the children. More acceptance of it from the parents. Then the small and separate choices of a single night produce a whirl of outcomes where friends are made, loves are lost, acquaintances die, a house is destroyed, lives are changed forever. All of this and more helps reshape a caring family into a proven group of partners living with war. And it happens in just 128 pages. The book earned the Carnegie Medal in 1978. It remains very much a prize-winner today.
