The animals of the forest prepare for the winter season in this classic Caldecott Medal–winning picture book by husband-and-wife duo Berta and Elmer Hader. When the geese migrate south, the woodland animals know it’s time to get ready for winter. Rabbits and deer grow thick warm coats. Chipmunks build up stores of seeds and nuts in their homes to munch on all winter long. Skunks and pheasants don’t need to change anything. Raccoons get ready to sleep until it’s warm again. The wise owls see a rainbow around the moon and warn the others of a big snow on the way. What will the animals do when the storm disrupts their winter routine?
Berta and Elmer Hader created many delightful books for children. The Big Snow was awarded the Caldecott Medal in 1949.

My daughter and I absolutely love this book! Stunning photos and such a lovely little story. Factual and yet entertaining and sweet at the same time.

Caldecot is an incredibly reliable seal of approval. In terms of imaging, imagination, storyline... From the first awards to modern winners, perfection EVERY time.

A favourite book for winter which illustrates the changes in the animals and their habitat.

The beauty of this book lies in its simplicity. A simple plot (winter is coming) with simple characters (sweet woodland creatures) create a charming story. The illustrations are realistic, but not too realistic for a child - there is a softness, a roundness to them that makes them "cute" too. I like that the authors didn't automatically assume that realism is boring to children - on the contrary, it can be fascinating, and is an almost forgotton element in todays children's literature. I read this when I was a little child, and, 20 years later when I looked at it again, it was like coming home. Please buy this book for your children or grandchildren. They'll be happy you did!
