A funny story of the supernatural which won the 1973 Carnegie Medal. When the Harrisons move to an old cottage in Oxfordshire and are beset by small domestic disasters, they assume that James is up to his tricks again. How can he explain that he's plagued by the ghost of a 17th-century sorcerer?

レビュー

  • Just as advertised. Efficient and prompt delivery.

Bought as a gift, lived up to expectations.

  • A Timeless Haunting That Still Holds Me Captive

I first met Thomas Kempe in the corner of my childhood library as a young girl. I must’ve checked this book out a dozen times, drawn back again and again by its eerie charm and the stubborn ghost who refused to be ignored. Penelope Lively’s The Ghost of Thomas Kempe isn’t just a ghost story. It’s a clever and funny tale about growing up, being misunderstood, and learning to stand your ground. Young James Harrison’s battle with a centuries-old sorcerer haunting his new home felt thrilling and relatable, even when the ghost was scribbling archaic warnings or causing chaos. Now, decades later, I’m filling a new bookcase, built for me by my husband, with the stories that shaped me. This one was a must. Reading it again, I’m flooded with memories of rainy afternoons, library dust, and the quiet magic of getting lost in a book. If you’re looking for a middle-grade classic that blends humor, mystery, and a touch of the supernatural, this one still casts a spell. And if you’re building a shelf of childhood favorites, Thomas Kempe deserves a place among them.

  • An enchanting read.

I read this book as a child and decided to find it again after all these years. I wasn't disappointed. It's a really great book and Penelope Livley's portrayal of the young boy and the ghost of the sorcerer is as enchanting as I remembered it. This book encouraged me to as a child and, more importantly, write. I can see now how it was such a literary influence on me. If you like a bit of childish ghostly escapism, then read this Carnegie Medal winning book. You won't be disappointed!

  • For teen and adults alike.

A well-constructed and entertaining story. The protagonist models resourcefulness and grit in striving to rid himself an an irksome ghost/poltergeist.

  • Wonderful

Really good mystery ghost tale. My daughter and I enjoyed this one together. She asked if we could get it for her friend's birthday as she thought he'd love it too. The main character is well described and you feel very sympathetic for his plight - the ghost is a real nuisance but he can't exactly tell everyone, they'd think he was cracked!
