Description

The Commonwealth Writers' Prize was established in 1987 by the Commonwealth Foundation, with Best Book (1987–2011) and Best First Book (1989–2011) selected across four regions (Africa, Canada & Caribbean, Europe & South Asia, South East Asia & Pacific). The winning works from each region competed for the Pan-Commonwealth best at that year's public program. From 1996–2011, the Commonwealth Short Story Competition ran in parallel, with winning works broadcast on radio. In 2012, the format was revised, and a new Commonwealth Writers program was launched. In 2012–2013, the Commonwealth Book Prize (Best First Book: regional winner £2,500, overall winner £10,000) and Commonwealth Short Story Prize (regional winner £1,000, overall winner £5,000) were established, but the Book Prize was discontinued after 2013, with only the short story prize continuing.
