• 現実を真摯に受け止めて描かれた苦悩のノンフィクション

  1977年、アメリカで実に10年ぶりとされる死刑が執行された。射殺されたのは、Gary Gilmore。彼は、武装強盗で無抵抗の男性二人を射殺し、死刑を宣告され、それを受け入れたのだった。それから15年、彼の弟であるMikal Gimoreが、なぜ兄が極刑につながる犯罪を犯すに至ったのか、その謎を解き明かそうと家族の歴史を顧みて書きあげたノン・フィクションが本著。 本著の一番の魅力は、徹底的に行われた取材によって明らかになった、目を覆いたくなるほどの悲劇的な過去を、その物語の渦中にいた著者が、逃げることなく直視し、しかし主観に流されずに、それでいて自分の気持ちを正直に織り交ぜながら語っている点。ともするとメロドラマチックなノンフィクションになりがちな主題だけれど、それが心に突き刺さる現実として読者に迫ってくる。まさに、タイトルのように、それはshot in the heartなのだ。 残虐な犯罪を犯して死に至った兄、Gary。そして、残虐な犯罪の犠牲者になって死んでいった兄、Gaylen。父も母も死に、残った兄の Frank Jr.は失踪。そして一人取り残されたMaikelは、この呪われたGilmore家の呪縛はどこから始まるのだろうかと、自らのルーツを遡っていく。敬虔なモルモン教の一家に育った母Bessieと、一回り以上年上の夫Frankという2人の結婚は、始まりから暗いものだった。Frankには「何人もの」前妻や子供がいたし、謎めいた過去があった。酒に溺れ、犯罪を繰り返し、一つ所に定着できないFrankは、やがて妻子に暴力をふるうようになる。理由もなく殴られ、罵られ、鞭で打たれるFrank Jr.とGary。そんな幼少時代が、彼らの人格形成に与えた影響は…。Garyともう一人の兄、Gaylenは、犯罪に犯罪を重ね、刑務所を出たり入ったり。Maikelは、唯一父Frankの愛を受けて育つが、それは歪んだ愛情で、毎日は両親の罵倒や暴力、母の狂気に満ちていた。そんな家庭環境で育った兄の持つ犯罪への執拗なこだわりは決して理解できないものではなく、Maikelは自分にも同じ犯罪者の血が流れていることに恐怖を抱き、絶望に苛まれる。一方で、同じ境遇にいながらにして犯罪に手を染めなかったFrankの進む道も、決して容易いものではなく…。 犯罪者の家族となることが、どういうことなのか。死刑を執行するということに、どういう意味があるのか。目をそらしてはいけない現実を、深く考えさせられる一冊。そして何より、家族とは何なのか。家族の愛の深さに気づかされる。虚構ではない、真実だからこそ、読む人の心を揺さぶることができる物語なのだと思う。そして、真実は虚構の物語のように、ハッピーエンドでは終わらない。長い時を経て築きあげられたGilmore家に悲劇は、そう簡単には幕を閉じないし、MaikelとFrank Jr.は、今でも決して逃れることのできない亡霊に取り付かれ、悪夢を見続け、悩み、苦しんでいくのだろう。それが現実であり、その現実と対面して生きていくしかないのだろう。 かなり重い物語ではあったけれど、暗さよりも、生と死、家族の愛、運命を受け入れるというこ…そんなことについて、深く考えることができたので、貴重な一冊だったと思う。映画Dead Man Walkingをもう一度観たくなった。

• 心に残る作品

  元rolling Stones誌の音楽ライターであり、死刑囚Gary Gilmoreの実弟、Mikal Gilmore氏による作品。 核となる家族の話、両親それぞれの出自に加え、兄の処刑地となったユタ州とモルモン教の歴史も織り交ぜて書かれており、兄Garyが死刑囚となるまでの「血の連鎖」が深く理解できる。 文章は客観的であり、兄や両親の行動も時には容赦なく記している。しかし、ところどころに著者の感情があふれ出ている部分もあり、単なる「アウトサイダーによる記録」となっていない。 個人的には「幽霊」や著者の「夢」の描写部分は不要だと感じるが、それがこの作品に幻想的な味を加えていることは否めない。しかし、話が独特であることに加え、著者の文章への緩急のつけ方が秀逸であり、一気に読んだ。 作品を読んでいる最中にも、Garyの運命には大変心が痛んだ。 そして、作品の最後に明かされる家族の「秘密」に、ますます悲痛な思いがした。 日本語版は村上春樹氏が翻訳を手がけている。 大変良い作品であるので、英語・日本語どちらでも、読んでおきたい一冊と自信をもっておすすめする。

• すごい話だけど

  内容もすごいし、きちんとした文章で感情的になりすぎることもなく、落ち着いて書かれた読ませる話だと思うけれど、もう一度読み返そうという気持ちになれない。説明ができないけれど私はこの本が好きではないということだと思う。

• 日本でも翻訳が出たはず

  アメリカ死刑執行禁止令の後、その禁止令を撤回させることになった死刑囚、ギャリー・ギルモアの実弟が、兄の厳しく情け無用だった人生とそれを取り巻く当時の貧しいユタ州の一家の個人的な記憶と呪いを、切々と美しい文章でノスタルジックに綴っていく。悲劇に包まれたこの一家のすべての呪いが明らかにされた時、読者はその深い動揺を抑え切れないはず。長編でありながら全編に渡って緊張感と迫力があり、読み手をまったく飽きさせない作家の手腕には完璧に脱帽。傑作！

• Very interesting book. I originally bought it as part of an anthropology course I was doing, but have read it several times since. Very well written.

• Document exceptionnel, écrit par le petit frère du "Serial killer" Gary Gilmore. A lire absolument, après avoir lu "The Executioner's Song" de Norman Mailer, un des meilleurs livres de Mailer (qui traite du même Gary Gilmore, dans la lignée de "In Cold Blood" de Truman Capote). Sobre, touchant, dramatique... Une histoire d'une "certaine Amérique"...

• Mikal Gilmore's account of "growing up Gilmore" is an intense, eye opening, gripping read. For a certain generation the Gary Gilmore execution will never be forgotten as it dominated the news cycle for months Mikal is his younger brother by 12 years which may have been 1000 based on how much changed in the Gilmore household over that time. Gary and his 2 other brothers were abused and harassed by their father Gary senior for all of their childhoods. Mikal's account here is to try and reconcile all that violence, turmoil and poverty which ruined their lives with the relative peace and prosperity of his own. The arc of this story reaches back to Gilmore's grandparents - on his mother's side to the 1890's and the violent, polygamous days of early Mormonism and on his father's side to a 1000 lies and urban legends making any trail past his paternal grandmother seem like descending down a bottomless dark hole. Both family trees are fascinating for both their effect on the Gilmore's and their bigger story about America of 100-150 years ago. Mikal is talented writer and strikes a balance between understanding all the protagonists but not overly sympathizing or simplifying this complicated story. He does an amazing job making sense of so many strings of this story right through Gary's execution and the work of Larry Shiller and Norman Mailer to document this first execution in a decade in America. There is much to parse through. I could not put it down. The murders that Gilmore committed cannot be forgotten, forgiven or overshadowed but Gilmore does give us a picture of the institutional violence and exploitation that Gary and his brothers faced in prisons and the near impossibility of overcoming it. Written in 1993 it's not lost of its impact to engage the reader.

• I came across this book in my psychology, behaviour studies. It was recommended by another author as an example of how a dysfunctional family (and how!) comes to be. The author is the younger brother of a famous American murderer. His writing style is beautiful. His family story is tragic. Already I have a list of people who want to borrow this book from me, so they can read it for themselves, having heard me raving about it.
