Best book in a decade
I absolutely loved this book. It seemed to me to open up to all the unknown possibilities in the universe instead of shutting them down. It verbalises unfashionable philosophical thoughts that reflect the type of thoughts I've always had and most of all, it asks questions that stayed with me for quite a while after I'd finished it. Questions I've asked a lot, to do with the connection between thought and feeling. Are feelings are born of thinking in a certain way? I disagree. When a feeling becomes separated from thought and impossible to identify, what's that? I think it might be transcendence. I'm sure we are born with feelings but think if no trauma has been involved, they are pure and curious. I also loved her expositions of what constituted a crime against nature (or culture). There's a lot that fits with Buddhist teachings. 'Blind chance an argument for destiny he had never considered before'. ! Fantastically cosmic, this book: 'are we not chemistry that transforms light'?' It was enormously hopeful. this foregrounding of cosmic possibilities writ with clarity. What we don't know and what it could mean. The possibility of ghosts and angels all around me! And then, the absolute necessity and core of existence - opposites. And it's now many, many years since I identified the synaptic gap as the gap where meaning can be created, where flexibility is made possible without which, nothing is alive. Gaps. Central. So all in all, what an absolute joy to read this validating and ever expanding novel. Of course, it didn't win the Booker. Not trendy enough. Shame. Now that I've said all that, I really should read it again!
