This book has summoned my attention multiple times, and when I need to convince someone of the power of afro-centric poetry I pull this book out. Baba Askia provides an aesthetic that is much different that his other book Dawnsong, here he calls the attention to the struggle of and for existence of black culture; he brings the situation forward in such an intelligent way that it is more relevant now: in this day and time. Often I find myself looking at the publishing date to ensure it was written years before, that's how relevant he is.
