Description
The Jnanpith Award, established in 1961 and first awarded in 1965, is one of India's highest literary honors. Organized by Bharatiya Jnanpith, it recognizes writers' "outstanding contribution towards literature" in Indian languages listed in the Eighth Schedule and English. It uses a nomination process, with evaluation conducted through language-specific advisory committees (3 members each) and a selection committee (7-11 members). It is principally awarded during the recipient's lifetime, with rules such as language rotation and consideration of works from within the past 20 years (rules are revised annually). Recipients receive a commemorative citation plaque, Saraswati statue (bronze replica), and currently a cash prize.
