Description
Established in 1986 and awarded annually by the English-Speaking Union (English-Speaking Union) until 2011. It honored important literary and non-fiction works that contribute to the understanding and interpretation of American life and culture, with winning works regarded as 'literary ambassadors' featuring superior contemporary English expression that convey America to the world. A jury panel selected from new publications in categories such as fiction, biography/autobiography, current affairs, American studies, poetry, etc. Notable winners include Tom Wolfe, Joan Didion, Raymond Carver, Gore Vidal, John Cheever, John Updike, Don DeLillo, Philip Roth, Annie Proulx, and others.
